At L&A we value our Growth Mindset, especially going into the holiday season and new year. Take a peek into what Growth Mindset means to us and why it is one of our core values.
Fixed vs Growth are the two mindsets that essentially shape our lives. Dr. Carol Dweck, author of Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, developed the theory of Growth vs Fixed Mindset through decades of researching mindset and the effects on growth and learning. The mindset that we carry for a particular area of our lives, whether it is work, creativity, relationships, health, learning, or anything else, is directly related to how much success and growth we can possibly see in that area of life. This directly reflects what modern psychology knows about how belief systems about our abilities & potential fuel behaviour and predict our success.
Fixed Mindset
A fixed mindset assumes that our intelligence, creativity, character, and strengths are static parts of ourselves which we cannot change in any meaningful way. Success & failure become an affirmation of that inherent intelligence, or lack therefore, and a self fulfilling prophecy of whether we believe we can, or cannot, achieve something. The byproduct of this is that it encourages one to strive for success and avoid failure at all costs to maintain the sense of being intelligent; this means never trying anything outside of ones existing comfort zone or knowledge base and therefore never experiencing true growth.
Growth Mindset
A growth mindset understands that our intelligence, creativity, character, and strengths are developed through effort, hard work, learning, and persistence. What makes the growth mindset so positive is that it creates a passion and zest for learning and improving, rather than an obsession with proving ones own abilities and worth. This is best captured in how the growth mindset individual respond to challenges; when faced with failure or challenges a growth mindset will see that their performance can be improved through learning and effort. When we practice a growth mindset, we never see challenges or failure as anything more than an opportunity to learn, grow, and try until we achieve the results we desire.
Why is this an L&A Value?
At L&A we are incredibly values & culture driven, as Peter Drucker once said ‘Culture eats strategy for breakfast’! When we interview we look for culture fit, values alignment, and growth mindset over existing skillset. We believe that the individual who is a strong culture fit, believes in our vision, and has a growth mindset will always outperform over the long run and will have the necessary skills needed to be a part of a fast growth company and industry.
If an individual brings a growth mindset into their role it means they will have a passion for learning and improving, which is crucial in the ever evolving social media industry. We as a team, are continuously learning and growing, this provides us and our customers the opportunity to create true innovation, experiment, learn, and succeed together.
For us our Growth Mindset value means
We embrace the challenge and opportunity that comes with growth and see this as a learning opportunity
We have a desire to grow personally & professionally
We push our own limits
We are always learning
We don’t say no, we say how
We celebrate wins on the journey of growth
In Dr. Carol Dweck’s own words…
“Why waste time proving over and over how great you are, when you could be getting better? Why hide deficiencies instead of overcoming them? Why look for friends or partners who will just shore up your self-esteem instead of ones who will also challenge you to grow? And why seek out the tried and true, instead of experiences that will stretch you? The passion for stretching yourself and sticking to it, even (or especially) when it’s not going well, is the hallmark of the growth mindset. This is the mindset that allows people to thrive during some of the most challenging times in their lives.”
